As things stand, people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.

The spa and wellbeing industry is in a powerful position to provide holistic support during cancer treatment and beyond, but historic training standards and misinformation have been a barrier to providing care, causing distress both to practitioners and patients.

The journey to changing that narrative is underway, but it needs to go further and be better. At the SATCC, our vision is to ensure that every spa and wellness centre has the skills they need to provide touch therapies for anyone with, being treated for or recovering from cancer, with confidence.

The spa world is changing. Over the last 20 years, many wellbeing industry leaders have recognised the need to change the status quo.

CHANGING ATTITUDES

Over the last 20 years, many wellbeing industry leaders have recognised the need to change the status quo. Where once therapists were taught that they could not touch a cancer patient without causing harm, training providers have stepped in to create adaptable protocols, safe treatments and insurable accreditations that support the client and empower the therapist.

This is underpinned by advances in medical thinking that show the power of touch therapies in positively benefitting people at all stages of their cancer journey.

However, there's still work to do.

"The SATCC's vision is to ensure that every spa, salon and therapist within the UK, and beyond, is trained to warmly welcome anyone living with cancer."

So, what are we
doing about it?

While enormous efforts have been made, we can go further. Until the formation of the SATCC there was no standard-setting authority for oncology touch treatments, the rollout of training remains too slow to support the volume of people in need of care, and patients are not always armed with the information they need to easily find the right treatments and experiences to suit.

To address that, we are delivering in four key areas which we invite healthcare professionals, spa and beauty practitioners, and individuals themselves to enjoy, get involved with and contribute to:

1

Setting the standard

We have set the gold standard for oncology touch treatments and training providers, who receive a hallmark of approval that therapists, spas and spa goers can trust.

2

Educating and sharing knowledge

By creating a register of SATCC approved training providers, we are dedicated to supporting spa therapists and wellness businesses seeking to further their education.

3

Connecting people and places

We are connecting spas with those who need them the most, making it easy for spa goers to find a qualified individual or destination with the best experiences to suit them.

4

Inspiring and empowering a community

We are building a community for communication, conversation, learning, inspiration, research and advice for all aspects of wellness during and beyond cancer treatment.
