Increase the variety of veg in your diet

Different types of vegetables offer different health benefits, but these are the ones that are especially beneficial!


These vegetables contain a natural ingredient called indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to be cancer protective. This family of vegetables includes broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale.

Red, orange, yellow, dark green veg

Vegetables in these colours are known for their powerful antioxidants. For example, tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, spinach, cabbage and Swiss chard all contain a wide range of plant chemicals that are highly protective.


These have a powerful anti-cancer compound called allicin. They include the sulphur-rich (and smelly) garlic, red and white onions, spring onions, leeks and chives. Allicin can boost immune function and protect against cancer cell proliferation.

Top tip:
If you’re using garlic, chop or crush it 10 to 15 minutes before cooking with it as this greatly increases its potency and protects the allicin from being destroyed by heat.
