Why does cancer treatment result in menopause?

Some cancer treatments (like chemotherapy and some surgeries) can result in a medically induced menopause, which is effectively the early and sudden onset of menopause.

This is because the treatment causes the ovaries to stop functioning sooner than they would have done naturally. While the principle is the same as a natural menopause, women who experience medical menopause tend to find that it happens much faster than natural menopause, and it often causes more severe symptoms.
