Dr. Barbara Brockway
Advisor, SATCC
Biochemist and cosmetic scientist
Dr. Barbara Brockway has more than 30 years' experience in applied biochemistry. Her career has taken her from pure biochemical research, working at the universities of Surrey, Kent and Reading, to developing cosmetic actives in the commercial world. She started her cosmetics work at The Body Shop with Anita Roddick, where she was proud to be the initiator of the Hemp range.
Dr. Brockway's doctoral research into collagen synthesis, and her more recent interest in epigenetics and the power of omics, means she fully understands the complex biological processes affecting tissue integrity. Her extensive background in cosmetic raw materials includes working in the USA, in New York for Collaborative Laboratories (now part of BASF), and in Texas for Huntsman LLC, managing their cosmetic divisions.
Today, she lives in the UK and works as a consultant to the cosmetics industry. Her areas of interest include technical writing on topical subjects from the microbiome, the application of exosomes to the removal of senescent cells. Dr. Brockway is a Fellow Member, Past President, and current Trustee of the UK Society of Cosmetic Scientists. She is also on the University of Reading, Chemistry Advisory Board.
Why the SATCC?
"For more than 50 years I have developed my knowledge and understanding of the skin, as well as the role of cosmetics. Cancer patients often suffer enormously from skin sensitivity and irritation resulting from treatment, while a raft of outdated myths add to their challenges during an already difficult time.
I am delighted to be working with the SATCC, and am committed to the charity's mission to dispel unhelpful falsehoods through evidence-based science, establishing trusted protocols that enable cancer patients to safely access the healing benefits of therapeutic touch and spa treatments."
